Data Management provides the ability to organize information -- usually through a database and an application for viewing the information (often a web browser such as Internet Explorer). With the advancement of web design tools, Data Management has become increasingly affordable and efficient. Data can now be displayed through browsers via HTML and scripting languages (such as PHP), making the data easily accessible across various platforms and over the Internet.

Although any type of data can be managed, it is especially useful to organize information such as address books and contact lists, product information, schedules, real estate listings, and automotive information for dealerships. Data Management offers a single source for accessing data for updates, additions and deletions as well as unlimited reporting capabilities.

What's the different between prepackaged and custom designed?
Prepackaged software generally offers limited options for manipulating and viewing data, and is copyrighted to keep designers from making changes to it. Custom designed software offers limitless options and your designer can add and change the software to suit your needs. Usually, custom designed applications are less expensive than prepackaged options.

Why is Data Management beneficial?
One of the most prevalent benefits of the Internet is the ability to share large amounts of data with relative ease. This is also true of Intranets - local networks that connect a company's computers at a single location. Software technology has furthered this convenience by providing universal portals by which you can view data in a pleasing and familiar interface such as a browser like Internet Explorer. Previously, companies had to hire programmers to create custom software to view and manipulate data. Now, some web designers are able to integrate this service into their development.

How can I view my database information?
eStudio can develop an unlimited number of advanced queries and reports to view your data through a standard browser window. This is the fastest, easiest way to organize, view and print your database information.

A case study: Sturgis Hospital
When we designed the Sturgis Hospital website, we incorporated a database which stores the information about their doctors. This information be searched by specialty, for just the doctors who are accepting new patients, or by the last name. Even though the information is accessed in a variety of ways, each doctor has only been entered into the database once -- so by changing their address or phone number in the database record, all of the results for that doctor will automatically be updated. View the Hospital's search page ...

A few years after developing their website, the Hospital approached us about creating an Intranet website for them which would be accessed by all of the Hospital employees -- but not the outside world. The site was designed on their internal network on a web server running MySQL and PHP. A database provides an "In and Out" board for tracking the availability of doctors as well as the cafeteria's weekly schedule, and an IT job tracking system where employees can report and track IT problems through the site.

We're sharing this example because it highlights some of the posibilities for data management. Not only is it a convenient way to share information on your website, but it can also be used internally on your own network to manage jobs, contacts and other information.

For data management projects, we'll create a MySQL database* as well as any tables within the database you might need (for example, a customer table storing name, address, and phone numbers or a product table including available options for each product).

We'll also create any necessary administrative pages to view, modify, delete or add records into the database tables. These pages can reside in a password protected area for your security.

We can also integrate the database into any new or existing website using a programming language called PHP*. These pages can allow customers to create or view orders, maintain their contact information as well as an endless list of other possibilities.

Each project is customized to the customers needs to ensure that you're always getting exactly what's right for you without having to pay for features that you don't need. It's a cost-effective way to manage your business data utilizing the power and functionality of the Internet. These projects are completely scalable and pages can be added at any time.

*NOTE: There are other types of databases and programming languages instead of PHP and MySQL. However, we have extensive knowledge using these tools and only take on projects using them. All of our hosting plans offer both MySQL and PHP but if you are using another hosting service, we suggest you contact them to find out if they are available for your website.

The largest cost associated with data management is the initial planning and development. All costs are quoted per job, based on a variety of factors including the amount of information that will be managed, how it will be managed and the tools that will be required to manage it. Generally, a fee of $90/hour billed in partial hours with a 15 minute minimum is charged for programming and any data entry. Additional costs for graphic design as well as HTML design may apply.

Would "Boxed" be best for you?
If your company is looking into data management, you have most likely all ready considered the application cost verses the potential benefits to your company. Another comparison to consider is the cost and benefit of a custom developed application (what we offer) verses a "boxed" version. Many times, boxed versions will be more expensive since you have to pay for each user who will be accessing the application. You may also have to buy tools for the application that you won't even use -- while having to pay for additional tools or "add-ons" that do not come standard.

Prepackaged software generally offers limited options for manipulating and viewing data, and is copyrighted to keep designers from making changes to it. Custom designed software offers limitless options and we can add and change the software to suit your needs. However, there my be cases where a boxed solution will work best -- especially if there is an inexpensive option out there that offers what you need. Contact eStudio and we can help determine which option will be best for you based on your requirements.

Cost for website updates is quoted by time.
eStudio charges $108/hour billed in partial hours with a 10 minute minimum -- the same as our other development fees.
